The Basics of a Nosebleed

What Is a Nosebleed?

A lot of people go through life having a few nosebleeds every so often thinking it’s normal. For some, it’s actually more dangerous than one would think. The middle to the front part of the nose is not the only area experiencing trauma when a nosebleed occurs. There are larger blood vessels further back in the nose that can rupture from trauma or high blood pressure or blood thinners. This can be life-threatening.

Who Experiences a Nosebleed

A majority of people will experience a nosebleed in their lifetime. Fortunately, most of these are minor and will stop on their own or by just pinching the nose. Minor nosebleeds are more common in children from nose picking or gentle trauma or dryness.

However, about 6% of these people will need medical help. serious nosebleeds are more common in older individuals as they have more dryness in the nose and have comorbid conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. They are also more likely to be on blood thinners. This is where a nosebleed goes from an inconvenience to a serious medical danger.

How to Stop a Nosebleed

The most common method of stopping a nosebleed is by pinching the nose. If that does not stop it then you have to seek medical help in an urgent care center or the emergency room of a hospital. When nosebleeds are more serious a lot of things can go wrong.

Time is also more important for people that are older or have underlying health conditions while experiencing a nosebleed. A balloon catheter device was invented that has a balloon on the back and one on the front. However, these are difficult to insert and need two holes to inflate adding extra time to their application. They are straight shaped and do not follow the natural curve of the nasal passage leading to difficulty inserting it and possibly more bleeding at times from scraping the septum and the side walls.
